FAQ

What is a Mad Science Camp?

Mad Science camps are designed for exciting and fun, hands-on science activities. Your child will become a junior scientist for the week, having the opportunity to experience a variety of adventures. We use an inquiry-based technique that allows even the youngest camper to enjoy learning. Children will design, create, build and assemble a variety of interesting projects and will take at least one project home every day. We will provide everything your child will need. We recommend that each child bring a nut-free snack and a non-carbonated drink (like juice or water). Children should dress comfortably and come ready to have some fun!
How long has Mad Science been running camps?

Mad Science of Fairfield & New Haven Counties is a franchise of The Mad Science Group. Our programs are created by a team of professional scientists and teachers at our head office, in Montreal, QC. Millions of children in over 160 locations, in 22 countries have enjoyed our programs. Mad Science of Fairfield & New Haven Counties has been operating since 1997.

What is the child to instructor ratio?

The child to instructor ratio varies depending on enrollment. Our goal is to have at least one counselor for every 13 students. Typically our camp size averages between 12 - 20 campers. We must have a minimum of 12 campers registered to run a camp.

What ages are the camps designed for?

Most of our camps are designed for children entering first through entering fifth grades.

Are different aged children in the same camp?

Yes and no. A few of our camps are divided by age, but, for the most part, they are not; we use a buddy system where, if required, the older children help the younger ones. Also, our low child to instructor ratio ensures that there is always plenty of help. For most activities, the children work in small groups.

Who are the Mad Science camp instructors?

Mad Science instructors tend to be college students pursuing an education or science degree, former/retired teachers, or teachers on summer break. Most of our scientists have worked with us during the school year or a previous summer. All of our instructors are fingerprinted through CES in Trumbull as a background check . They also receive summer-camp specific training. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers’ imaginations!

Do you offer extended care? Do you have a late policy?

No. All of our camps are 3 hours in length with no extended care. Please pick up your child on time!  Our Mad Scientists have other responsibilities immediately following camp.  Late pickup charges will begin 5 minutes after the end of camp.  The late pickup charge is $1 per minute and must be paid to the Mad Science office.

How do I register my child for a camp?

All registration is done through our sponsoring partners.  Please see the partner locations listed on our information tab under our Camp & Vacation Programs section. You will find the locations, dates and contact information. If you still have questions and would like to contact us, please do at 203-381-9754 or madscifc@sbcglobal.net.

How soon do I need to register to reserve a space for my child?

Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible, because space availability depends on how quickly everyone else signs up!

What is your refund policy?

We will follow the guidelines set up by our partner locations. However, should a partner location not have a refund policy, then 30 days prior to the first day of a program, a $30 fee will apply. 29 days or less, there is no refund.

If we do not get sufficient enrollment to hold the camp, Mad Science will make every effort to provide alternative camp locations, or you will be offered the option of a full refund.

Can I sign my child up for more than one camp?

Yes, in fact, we encourage it. Each camp is completely different so your child can enjoy them all without repeating activities. Last year, many children initially registered for only one camp. After they discovered how much they enjoyed our activities, they attempted to register for additional camps. Due to the popularity of many of our themes and weeks, several children were disappointed when the additional camps were already sold out.

My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. If he/she took a particular camp, will it be the same camp that he/she has taken before?

We try our best to rotate camp themes. Some locations will have a theme that was offered during the school year. We do add in additional activities so that there is some difference. This year, our Invention-ation Camp has had multiple changes. Each year we have had children take a particular camp again and still enjoy it the second time.

Does Mad Science have a minimum enrollment requirement?

The minimum number of campers necessary to hold a camp is 12. Mad Science tries to inform parents as soon as possible should it appear that a camp will not reach its minimum enrollment. On these occasions, we will offer priority enrollment in other camps. Contact us for additional information on camp cancellations.

What should my child bring/wear to camp?

Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun! Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We ask that children not wear open toed shoes to a Mad Science camp, specifically no flip-flops. Also, as we will be outside on a number of occasions, please do not dress your child in any clothes that you do not want to get dirty. You may wish to apply sunscreen or insect repellent, or send these items with your child. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful.

Please send your child in with water and a snack that is NUT FREE. Some activities may include edible items. These "snack-tivities" may be consumed at snack time or must be taken home. It is always a good idea to inform Mad Science of any food allergies your child may have on your registration form at your location. We cannot guarantee that coolers or refrigeration will be accessible at our camp-sites.

Medical Information about your Camper

Prior to actual attendance at a Mad Science summer program, we require certain medical information from you regarding your camper. This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper. You will find this request on your registration form at the partner locations.

You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.

By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp. Parent/guardian understands that Mad Science is insured for its own liability and does not provide Medical or Accident insurance for camp participants.

Are these the only locations where you will be holding your camps this summer?

Maybe not. We may be adding locations.  Also, if you can get at least 10 children and can provide a location, we will bring a camp to you. Usually, we can customize something to fit the times and dates that you want. Call us, we'd love to discuss this further if you're interested.

Is there a behavior policy?
Mad Science strives at all times to provide fun science activities to all children.  In an effort to fulfill this commitment, we ask that all children enrolled adhere to basic behavioral guidelines.  We realize that the hands-on, high-energy nature of our program excites and motivates children.  Our programs are specifically designed to harness and direct that energy and excitement.  Our instructors set clear boundaries and expectations as to appropriate conduct, and we will hold all students to these expectations.  If a child becomes disrespectul or hurtful of others in the program, we will notify you immediately and ask for your help to resolve the situation. If situation is not resolved we reserve the right to remove your child from the program. No refund will be given.
